The Label Factor:
I have to be honest here; I’ve never really liked La Gloria Cubana labels. The woman on the label reminds me a bit of Amelia Bedelia. Aside from that nit pick, I do like what they have done with the Edicion Limitada 2011. The glossy second band adds some nice flair to the label, giving it a premium look that I assume they were going for. I do wonder, though, why don’t the reds match?
What We Liked:
I like to think of the figurado vitola as a stretched perfecto, and have mentioned enjoying the perfecto in the past. All the same praise applies to the Serie R Edicion Limitada. With the small ring gauge of the foot, the stick is easy to have lit and smoking in no time. While the burn wasn’t razor sharp, it never reached a point where I felt the need to make corrections.
I’m beginning to notice a pattern in all of the cigars I’ve been smoking lately. They all start with a blast of pepper before mellowing out after an inch or so. The Serie R Edicion Limitada is no different. After mellowing out, a pleasingly bitter, black coffee flavor rolled in and the cigar becomes very smooth on the palate. I paired this cigar with a Mexican Coke and found that the sweetness in the drink helped balance out the bitterness of the coffee flavors. In the final inches, the flavor started to resemble scotch, with hints of oak and earth but minus the harsh alcohol taste. In fact, not being a fan of scotch myself, I would like to find a scotch that tastes like the La Gloria Cubana Serie R Edicion Limitada 2011. Then I could pair that scotch with this cigar. Cigarception.
Really, the best thing I can say about the Serie R Edicion Limitada is that I smoked it to a very small nub and wanted to keep going. The figurado shape is very thin on the end and it makes it difficult to continue without a pair of tweezers. I’ll bring some next time.
What We Didn’t Like:
Read the name of this cigar out loud — La Gloria Cubana Serie R Edicion Limitada 2011. It’s a mouthful. This guy needs a nickname. Or girl. If I ever make a cigar, I’m giving it a one-word name. Richard. The Cigarnubs Richard.
As for the La Gloria Cubana Serie R Edicion Limitade 2011, It’s not easy to find solid information on this stick. After some Googling, I think the difference between the Serie R and the Serie R Edicion Limitada is two-fold:
1. The Serie R Edicion Limitada is extremely limited. They were only sold in special humidors containing 24 of these and 24 regular La Gloria Cubana Edicion Limitada 2011. Total production was 6000 Serie R EL and 6000 LGC EL.
2. The Serie R Edicion Limitada is different from the regular Serie R in that the blend includes an additional proprietary ligero.
If anybody reading this has any additional information on this stick, or finds anything wrong with my information above, please let me know.
Outside of that, there isn’t a whole lot to complain about here. I wouldn’t say it’s the most complex cigar, but with smooth, pleasing flavors, I don’t mind.
Should You Try/Buy It:
It’s hard to say yes when I doubt anybody can find one. I was lucky enough to be gifted one during a secret santa exchange last year. I didn’t realize just how rare it was until I went to the Googles. That being said, this was a quality smoke so if you happen across some in a B&M somewhere, definitely grab a few. My secret santa also sent me a regular Serie R and I look forward to comparing the two down the road.
