Having recently begun to “get into” rum, I’ve been trying various rum cocktails when I get the chance. During a recent visit to Hilton Head, I ordered a Rum Runner with dinner. The drink that landed in front of me was glistening with potential, but lacked one key flavor; rum. For all I could tell, I was just handed a glass of fruit juices mixed together. I resolved to improve upon this when I returned home.
After looking up various recipes for Rum Runners and realizing there were a ton of alcoholic ingredients that I didn’t have and didn’t want to buy, I decided to just make up my own drink. I am referring to this new concoction as the “Rum Walker”, since it’s a lot easier to make than a “Rum Runner”, as you don’t need to buy a slew of alcohol that you’ll never use for any other drink. Creme de Banana!? Get out of here!
2 oz Rum – Pictured is Papa’s Pilar Blonde but this can easily be swapped out with other rums. I haven’t tried with a dark rum, but I could see that being delightful.
1.5 oz Orange and Pineapple Juice
1.5 oz Grapefruit Juice
Before doing anything, slice that peach and cut the lime in half. Grab a glass and throw some ice in it, placing a few slices of peach on top of the ice.
Grab a cocktail shaker and fill partly with ice. Add rum, fruit juices and squeeze half the lime in as well. After shaking, strain the contents into the glass you already prepared, resulting in the final product:
Though you may be tempted to eat those peaches, try to save them until after you’ve nursed the drink. Personally, I wait until the glass is completely empty, but I’m not your Dad so you can do whatever you’d like. However, by waiting as long as possible, you give those peaches plenty of time to absorb the flavors of the rum and fruit juices, resulting in a heavenly slice of peach upon completion. Good things come to those who wait.
