The Label Factor:
Named for the original founder of La Palina Cigars, Sam Paley, the limited edition Mr. Sam comes adorned with secondary band to compliment the signature gold LP label. If you took that off, you may have a hard time distinguishing the Sam from the Goldie, another limited release that we fell in love with. The Mr. Sam certainly has some big shoes to fill. Will it succeed? Let’s find out!
What We Liked:
I have to admit that I’m still crushing hard for the Goldie. When the Mr. Sam was announced, I knew it was a cigar that I had to try. It doesn’t hurt that my brain connects Mr. Sam to Mr. Plow from The Simpsons, so I find myself singing a modified version of that theme to myself whenever I think of the Mr. Sam.
I feel like we really got off track there. Let’s get back to the cigar, and specifically, let’s talk about the flavor. The Mr. Sam starts out with a bang…a flavor bang. Spice and earth kick things off, with woody flavors of cedar and oak coming to the forefront before too long. Around the halfway point, there was a smokiness present as well, which gave me pleasant flashbacks to the Ashton ESG. The entire profile is very “scotch-like”, so if that sounds like something you might be interested, the Mr. Sam may be right up your alley.
The 4″ x 52 Mr. Sam may not be very large, but it’s constructed flawlessly. The draw was exceptional, offering a silky smooth smoking experience from start to finish. There were no issues with burn either, as it was nearly razor sharp all the way through.
What We Didn’t Like:
The problem with the La Palina Mr. Sam is that it’s not the La Palina Goldie. The Goldie is a cigar that I fell in love with almost immediately. The Mr. Sam didn’t leave me with the same impression. Don’t take this the wrong way. The Mr. Sam is a great cigar, it just lacks the special something that made the Goldie stand out.
Definitely. In my opinion, the cigars coming out of La Palina are some of the most exciting in the industry. While I didn’t find the Mr. Sam to be as incredible as the Goldie, it comes at a significantly lower cost. If you’ve enjoyed previous La Palina releases or are looking to try your first, the Mr. Sam will not let you down.
