Dark 22oz glass bottle. To be honest, I barely paid attention to the label because the invitation to try a “Pitch Black” drew me in pretty deep. This just sounded intriguing. I poured it into a pint glass and was rewarded with a thick, cream colored head. Not much in the way of being subtle here: this beer is black. There are noticeable hops and roasted malts in the nose. However, I have to deduct some points because the image at the bottom of brothers Rob and Kurt happily clinking glasses reminds me that I am drinking alone tonight.

I’ve loved the idea of trying Anchor Brewing beers for quite some time. I blame their website, which contains some of the most appetizing beer photographs you’ll find. However, due to a less than stellar beer selection at my disposal, I’ve only been able to find a sixer of the original Anchor Steam Beer. Then, one day, I walk into my go-to shop for craft beer and see a Anchor Brewing Craft Originals sampler smiling at me. Well, of course, I bought it without a second thought. In this twelve pack, you get three each of four Anchor brews: Anchor Steam Beer, Liberty Ale, Porter and Wheat Beer. In addition to the beers, you’ll get a two-sided sheet containing info on each of the beers and a tasting guide for you to rate and make notes. You can then frame the sheet and put it on your wall – but be aware that you are weird if you do… Let’s take a look and see if this sampler is worth your time and money.
It’s impossible not to notice the Rogue Voodoo Doughnut in your local beer shop. With it’s bright pink color scheme, it immediately brings memories of Pepto-Bismol or that bubble gum flavored amoxicillin you took as a kid, which was insanely delicious. At least that’s how I remember it.
It’s no secret that my default drink pairing with a cigar is root beer. In fact, I’d be surprised if I’ve mentioned that fewer than a dozen times throughout my reviews. I’m a little bit scared to do a search for root beer on the site. The results could be embarrassing.
