Blind Root Beer Pairing Test

Blind Root Beer Pairing Test Header

Left to Right: Dr. Browns Original, IBC, Sprecher, Music City 2nd Avenue, Hank’s Gourmet

The Setup:

We have mentioned many times throughout reviews on this site that root beer is an incredible pairing with a cigar. Having only ever tried a few brands, we decided it was high time we grab a few varieties and see which we liked the most. We’re fans of IBC and massive fans of Sprecher, but didn’t want our bias to impact our decision making. The other three root beers were new to both of us.

So, while Nick and I enjoyed the Arturo Fuente Rosado Magnums you see above, a kind helper poured glasses of root beer at random and brought them out to us. The only thing missing was somebody rubbing our feet and fanning us with grape leaves.

And which root beer reigned supreme? Let’s find out…

Pairing Test: Oktoberfest

Oktoberfest Beer and Cigar Pairing

Lowenbrau Original, Hofbrau Oktoberfest, Hacker-Pschorr Oktoberfest, Paulaner Oktoberfest, Spaten Oktoberfest, Augustinerbrau Edelstoff

The Setup:

When you attend Oktoberfest in Munich, there are loads of beer tents where you can choose to spend your time and money. These tents are operated by six legendary German breweries. We wanted to determine which of these delicious creations paired best with the Quesada Oktoberfest cigar; a stick born to be paired with this style of brew. Unfortunately, we could’t locate every single Oktoberfest beer from these six companies, as Nashville doesn’t have the greatest beer selection. Even still, we do have a beer representative from each, with Löwenbräu Original and Augustinerbrau Edelstoff standing in for their Oktoberfest brethren.

How did the test work? You may notice there are two cigars in the above photo. Both Nick and myself smoked and consumed the beers above. Don’t worry, we split each beer so we were only moderately intoxicated by the end of the test. Which beer reigned supreme? Let’s find out.

Pairing Test: Beer

The Setup:

We had so much fun trying various soda pairings, we couldn’t help but do the experiment again with beer. There are way too many beer varieties for one smoke session, so we chose six beers that represented a wide array of flavors and styles.  We tried to go from lightest to darkest but forgot about the Dundee Pilsner so we went lightest to darker to lighter to darkest. It all worked out in the end.

Some general notes about the process: There are two of us, so in the time it took to smoke these Gran Toro Undercrowns, we each had about three beers. I know that doesn’t sound like a lot, but it was enough to…make things interesting. Despite the fact that he is a giant, Nick is quite the lightweight. Full disclosure, Nick got drunk. You cannot rely on his reviews of the pairings that came towards the end of the test. You can rely on Chris (the other Cigar Nub) for those.

For those who may be unfamiliar with the Undercrown, know that it is a medium bodied smoke with creamy, delicious flavors. Our full review of the stick will be up in the coming days. Now, on to the pairings…
